I may be being a comlete plank but i can't see how to adjust the headlight beam up and down.

Any ideas ? Unfortunately my user manual is in Dutch and i can't see it mentioned anywhere.

Just read the English Manual

and it says "NOTE if headlight aiming is required,consult your SUBARU dealer for proper adjustment of the headlight aim"

There is a Philips type plastic nut on the top of the H/L unit. Just twist this either way to adjust. Took me several goes to get it right (garages attempt was laughable).
