What are the best sporty diesel hatches?
Errrrmmm - flame suit on but try the Astra Sporthatch with the 150bhp CDTi engine (I have the estate) - usefully quick and a really fine engine in it.
Of course there is also the 200bhp 888 version...
You can get a 170bhp TDI Golf too.

my mums in the same situation, looking for something between 15-18k less than 3 years old,diesel,4 or 5 door and no bigger than a 3 series, wants somethin witha bit more prestige to step up from her 55 reg astra, been looking at golf tdi,Audi A3 or volvo s40
We test drove all the Audi, Golf, BMW 120d, etc etc, all very dull and boring so went for the Civic 2.2 CTDi in the end - superb car, and I think they may do a 3 door GT version, not sure though.
Nice handling and drive.

For £200 there is a plug and play box for the Astra 1.9 CDTI which takes it to 195bhp and 300lb torque
There is a forum for the CDTI Vauxhalls and the guys on there rave about this simple mod.
Worth a gander!

Kin quick - I considered that for my Astra but not convinced the gearbox would cope and the already pretty strong torque steer would make it a handful.
Hearing too many TDI chipping horror stories to consider it and the 150bhp is enough for 99% of driving conditions.

The 1 for the astra is very good, it feels more like a petrol nice wide power band, pulls for the whole rev range so is far smoother to drive
Emissions would go up (importantish to me), torque steer would increase, the clutch would have to work harder, etc.
Was very into the idea but you can have too much torque through the front wheels - 235lbs/ft is plenty I reckon!
Next car will have more power and torque but hopefully rear or 4WD to cope.
