Need a bit of advice with regard to the diffs on my car.

Its a MY97 WRX and when the bodyshop came to collect my my car they tried to take it away on a dolly.

Now not really realising I didnt stop them and got a phone call about 2 minutes later to say that the back end of the car had locked up and they were bringing it back.

They towed it back with all 4 wheels on the ground and left it with me.

Since this point when driving the car there is a noise coming from the NSR wheel that sounds like the beginnings of a wheel bearing and when trying to turn the car around with any sort of lock on it is as if the diffs are locked (tries to skip the inside wheel).

What is it they have fooked?

I was swaying towards the rear ddiff as have had the car up on axle stands and when turnng the front wheel forwards the opposite one turns backwards and the rears are stationary. When turning either of the rear ones all 4 wheels turn in the same direction.

Anyone out there got a definative answer would be much appreciated as dont want to start pulling bits out without knowing the cause of the problem.

They have fried the centre diff. It'll need replacing.

If done here about; £150.00 labour, £100.00 for a perfect centre viscous diff and the oil and gakets, say another £30.00. All plus VAT.

'Cos if you want to price it through a dealer the price may well be over a grand.

They are responsible for the damage make sure they understand that and that they will pay.

I think on a 97 you can do it with the box in place, not easy but a reasoanbly competant DIYer can do it in a day, spare turbo/WRX boxes go quite cheap on fleabay!

Of course that monkey from the bodyshop will be paying, so go to a dealer!

Nope, The TY752 box cannot be separated in situ. The roll pin for the main selector rod is inside the box under the tin plate on the top and you cannot get at it in any way to release the pin, when the box is in the car.

TY754 99 onwards is easy, before that, it is a box out job.

Many thanks to David for correctly identifying that the problem was the centre diff and supplying a new one extremely quickly allowing the car to be now back together and as sweet as ever.
