Hi all i know i wont like the answer to this but here goes ,
My car has started to smoke quite badly over the past few weeks now and my concern has grown over this short period of time ,
The smoke had developed a slight smell of burnt oil so when i got home today i took her for a little spin to see what happend , Well **** me , when i pulled up back home and left her on tickover it began to smoke very badly and it had a clear smell of oil in it ,
I then opened the oil filler cap and not knowing too much about an engine i discovered that i had air blowing out of the neck of the filler , kind of like a chuffing style of air , Now as i said i dont knoww too much but this is not good is it ???
Could this be Valve stem seals or maybe piston rings < If so how much work / time / and cost could possibly be involved in getting my car sorted , (its a 2003 WRX).
Please help with any advice or the best place to take it etc (i'm in the northants area )
I have just put a bloody offer in on a new house and this could well put the brakes on the lot so any advice/info would be awsome
Thanks in advance
Dave

You will get a chuffing from the filler cap when removed this is normal crank case compression, as long as it’s not excessive its fine.
Assuming the car runs ok no change in idle etc, it sounds more like your turbo seals are failing.
Keep a check on your oil level as failing turbo seals can empty the oil quite fast and lead to other problems

thanks for the response fella , at the risk of sounding stupid , what would be excessive chuffing/blowing
.
and now you mention it the oil was right down on the MIN mark of the stick last week so i had to top ot up .

Its hard to explain on here what is excessive and what is not, however I am sure if the smoking issue was caused by warn or damaged rings you would be watching smoke like fumes escaping from the filer cap too and would no something is not quite right. I really wouldn’t worry much about it just keep an eye on your oil in the mean time and confirm the issue with the turbo by taking the car to a garage.
it does sound very likely to have a gummed ring or possibly piston damage?? from your description, it could be turbo oil seals but highly unusual for your model car...............
best bet is a compression test and this will confirm a piston/ring issue
