Default Reverse gear stuck when stationary

Hi all - hope you can help me out here..

Got a '99 UK spec impreza turbo, and I can't get it out of reverse gear when the car is stationary. When reversing I've got to take it out of reverse gear while the car is still moving backwards - anyone seen this before?

dose it jump out of fith gear as well?i know a common fault on my98 to my00 is the nut comes loose on end of shaft holding reverse and fith gear syncro ring. reverse and fith uses same selector fork i think i.e pull gear stick back into reverse and ring gose forward onto reverse syncro then it slides back over onto fith syncro may be all loose on shaft, if you can understand that.. failing that i noticed that when i lifted off throtle at say 78mph and back on again the gear lever jumped back and forward a long way and popped out when on light throtle crusing... but after i fixed problem there is no movement at all now.. just a thought.

I had similar problem with mine '93 wrx!

sticking in reverse when stationary and also NOT GOING INTO fifth first attempt.

Mine turned out to be (probably the same with yours) a weirdly worn fifth syncro (no syncro on reverse) - probably caused by looseish big nut!

I had to remove complete box to fix!

your lucky - you can remove the centre diff to fix problem without removing box!

Mark.

Thanks for the tips chaps, i don't have troubles with any other gear, just reverse. Since I havent a clue how to remove the gearbox - anyone know a good mechanic that can do this in SE London? Subaru dealer I normally go to is going to charge me an arm and a leg, so prefer not to

Hi Andyxros,

I,ve got exactly same problem.
Do you know of anybody in the Staffordshire / W. Midalnds area that could do a good job on it at a decent price?

Cheers,
Ian.
