I have noticed that my clutch is starting to slip on my 1999 type R - not surprising - its done nearly 76000 miles so can't complain.

Its only in 5th gear at the moment accelerating say at 65mph and only occasionally, but i suppose it will just get worse.

Any guidance as to prices please and best to go for. No track days, just standard driving - the car is used mainly on the school run by my wife and me at weekends. Don't need anything fancy just good quality and value for money.

Live near Bristol so any recommendations as to where to go would be useful.

 

I felt mine slip once (same car as yours), but nothing since then and I have done a 1000 miles or so.

 

You could call David at Welcome to the API website.
They do an Exedy unit as good as the stock Sti for feel but super tough for you level of engine.

He sometimes does a 'while you shop' service. They are close to Leamington Spa Warwickshire.
They will drop you off into a town while they sweat on your clutch.

 

I would second that. API will be able to do the job same day by appointment and you will get a standard Exeddy at reasonable price.
It may be an early start for you from Bristol but it should be done in a day.
Also much nearer to you is Power Station. (Dirk or Rich) They can probably do something for you for similar money and save a good bit of travel time/fuel.

 

thanks for the replies - i have had 3 quotes so far but all are quoting without flywheel then 'do i want a lightened f/w' - whatever that may be!

generally it seems an extra £250 plus vat if I go for a lightened f/w but I have no idea if its worth the extra, or what I would gain over a stock change. Also only one quote has actually said they may not need to change the f/w - is it best to get both done at the same time or could I get away with just the clutch and not the f/w??

No reply yet from api or tsl but generally coming in at £700 with normal f/w and £950 with lightened - sounds very pricey to me - expecting c£500 for standard change maybe £600 for something a bit special. Quotes are all in inclusive of labour and vat.

If you like the car as it is then don't bother with the flywheel lightening.
It does enhance the engine characteristics, but if you are happy with the car, stick with the stock flywheel.

however: if the current wheel is scored/cracking etc (not uncommon) then a re-machined flywheel with a nice new clutch is a Very Good Idea as you are getting the clutch back to how it was new when assembled by Subaru.

You can fit a fresh clutch to an 'old' flywheel and be ok, I've done this 2 times on my racing Impreza with 360 bhp x 360 lbft torque.

Personally I would trust all the suppliers mentioned on here but my vote for this goes to API who did mine last time they did the transmission, and fitted a lightened flywheel which was worth it imho.

Here in Darlington the labour cost for changing your clutch would be £150. The cost of a clutch could be anything from £220 to £350 depending what you wanted.
If you wanted your gearbox oil changed at the same time there would be a further charge.
An OE flywheel lightened and balanced is £100 fitted.
These are kept in stock.
Make sure you are not being ripped off because a clutch change at £500 is not a cheap job and assumes a good quality uprated complete clutch set capable of 400 bhp plus.
