Default 5th gear goes with a bang!!!

Hi all,

While driving today, big bang in 5th and then lesser noise in the other gears. Got car lifted and took home. Stripped gearbox out to find what i think is 5th gear. ( is it in its own housing to back of gearbox with selector ) About 6 teeth stripped of bottom gear wheel.

Can anyone help as to what may have caused this! Over last couple of weeks car not been going as well.
Firstly i noticed in 2nd mid revs she would take off like a shoot all of a sudden and a slight vibration could be felt in steering wheel as if front wheels trying to spin.
Then while drivig on motorway at 70mph in 5th around 4000rpm, Push foot to floor rev's would shoot up by 500rpm then drop off by say 100rpm then increase as normal.
This then started to happen in most gears when driving hard around the 4000rpm mark.
Finally to result today in same problem in 5th only once boost was at max. my boost gauge needle was moving rapidly back and forward as if bouncing off limit. Also a vibration came through gearstick and steering wheel.
Then in trying to see what was going on i put foot down to get same problems only with a bang to come from gearbox.

If anyone can shed some light as to what was happening i would be very greatful.

what you describe is indeed 5th..

have you removed and inspected the clutch? the rest of the description sounds like the clutch has been slipping..

I've not yet looked at it only in passing as i was told when i bought the car it had an up-rated paddle clutch fitted, just took a quick look to see if i could find what make it was.
