Problem with Spell Checker !!

Sorry, know this is not scooby related, but I've found a problem with the spell checker!
The language is listed as English, but if you use the dropdown list, lo and behold, we also have British English!!. So does this mean that we are in fact checking in, dare I say it, American English???
How can I get it to use proper English by default? I'm already fed up with my other apps using a non-existing language
