I was wondering, I have developed an oil leak around the timming belt cover on my impreza and wanted to know how tough it would be to fix myself, and how often does this problem manifest itself? Just for historical record:
This car is driven normally ( I wouldn't say it was pampered but it isn't treated poorly either )

Has 55,000 miles on it

The clutch had a shudder issue for a while (when the car was started from a stop with a cold engine), I tried changing the plugs with some Denso's and that didn't fix the problem. Figured it was a dirty flywheel or clutch plate and decided to live with it. Later (a few months later actually) I noticed a burning smell, and an oil leak from what looked like one of the valve covers so I changed the PCV valve (That cleared up the shudder!) The burning smell never went away, I changed the oil and noticed oil all over the place underneath the engine and quickly pinpointed it to the timing belt cover. Hope the history helps, if not I at least hope it was a good read.

 

As we dont have any 2.5rs engines here in blighty I doulbt you will get a reply, have you tried posting this on the US BB ?

All of the EJ20/22/25 blocks are nigh on identical.

There are 3 seals at the front, the two cam seals, and the main crank seal.

Whether you can do them yourself, really depends on how mechanically minded you are, and how involved you want to get.

The main crank will be the easiest, and the cam seals will certainly mean re-doing the cam belt, tensioner, etc'.

You'd really need the workshop manual to do the job.
