Default Car selects only 2nd gear

I have a 2002 WRX bugeye with the 5MT (AA spec narrow gears) 77 000miles (clutch replaced at 30 000)

The gearbox shifts with out any noise or grinding. There is no slippage of the clutch.

I was crusing in 5th gear at 70 mph and then slowed down. I down shifted throught the gears with out any problems(using the clutch). I shifted 5-4-3-2 and continued to cruise. The car gearbox did no make any unusual noises.

I then attempted to up shift to 3 and I pressed in the clutch the gearlever went into neutral but I could not get any other gears. The gear lever would only go from 2 into neutral and back into 2 but I could not move it into the other gears. The gear level would move from side to side and back into 2. I drove it in 2 until I got home. The car goes into 2 with out any grinding or noises. The gear lever is slightly off centre

The gearbox would not select any other gear except 2. (even with the engine switched off). I let the car cool down for approx 2 hours. It would still only go it 2 and neutral. I started the car and engaged 2 gear and moved the car forward a few feet . I did this three times and then could select 2-3-4-5. I then engaged 3 and moved the car forward a few feet. Finaly I could engage 1 and reverse. The car drives fine in all gears.

This is the second time this has happened? The car is driving okay at the moment no noises etc. The dealership cannot find any fault. But I am reluctant to drive any distance as it gets stuck.

Any ideas why this would happen? What is causing this?

Is it possible that the pilot bearing is failing? or that one of the dowels is broken?
