bennetm, the point is that subaru have a different bloody model every week so yearly models narrow it down abit from just Impreza

Ok... so that was something I was always wondering aswell....
So what about all the other abbreviations?
CEL? PPP? BOV? OBD? MAF? etc...
I haven't been around scoobies that long but I'd like to be able to keep up

CEL = Check Engine Light

OBD = Never seen that one

WOT = Wide Open Throttle

MAP = Manifold Air Pressure, as in MAP Sensor

....there must be loads more? I bet Pat knows the most

Uh oh, TLAs break out again

Trout... OBD == On Board Diagnostic... it's an integrity verification subsystem of modern ECUs... for example the MY01 ECU runs diagnostics on the Lambda sensor, and the cat... thus it knows when the sensor is duff and, unlike older Scoobs, won't drink like a fish until you realise it's duff... it will let you know and (possibly) temporarily fall back to the other sensor. All very clever stuff

CEL == user speak, MIL == Subaru speak (Malfunction Indicator Lamp).

As for MYs, it helps a LOT to know what model year a car is when trying top diagnose a problem... for example eratic idle on anything up to MY99 is probably a sticky (or blocked) ISC (Idle Speed Controller), but the MY99-MY02 engines have a different (less likely to stick) idle speed controller, so it's more likely to be a problem with the MAF (Mass Air Flow) sensor, fuel pressure or the ignition system.
