Can you tell if a gearbox is going to be ok without fitting, not me personally but someone that knew gearboxs?

Have been down the road of fitting a fooked box before and dont want to go down that road again

It is a gamble to say the least. You can turn it over to see if it feels ok, but can't check the sysnchro's etc/bearings.

Unless you know the seller you are at risk.

if you are worried (like I was) buy from someone like Welcome to the API website, or buy one and have it opened/checked by the above!

I did the latter, and they found a duff 3rd sysnchro, but the rest was ok.
Cost £22 for the part and about £150 labour but at least I know the state of the box.

Buyer beware!

Further to the above you could drain the oil and see how much metal content is visible within the oil, remember there will always be some small metal flake.
