Which is the better turbo?
Car is 02 WRX, just looking for a healthy hike in power, both will be supported by new injectors, fuel pump and remap.
Many thanks

Made 325BHP on the TDO5 16G on my MY02 bugeye.....tough turbo, mappers love them to bits as they have been around for ages
I'd go for the STi Top mount, get Harvey to port the headers, PFR7 plugs....The best bang per buck Scooby LOL

Have a look at the above. The VF35 spools very quickly, which is a welcome similarity with the Td04. TD05's have bit of a reputation for eating gearboxes if tuned to ther potential; although this depends on your driving style and the way the car is mapped.

Just from my opinion forged on here.
I'm after a VF35 (28 if I can't get a decent price for a 35) as I wanted something that wouldn't be laggy and would compliment the newage TMIC I have fitted.
I don't want mega power and any increase in lag so my assumption was to go for a 35 an newage TMIC as apposed to an FMIC and TD05.
Can't afford a 6 speed just yet
Mind you this could all be alot of tosh (well, this is scoobynet!)

I have experience of neither turbo but am currently running a VF24 on a MY03WRX with supporting mods.
Great power, but I miss the early spool of the TD04. The early spool advantage on say a UK turbo with decat is marked, I speak from experience when I say that you will find yourself cursing when your trying to follow one in the 20 - 60 mph range in low gears.
The classic will be on boost and disapearing into the sunset whilst your car is thinking about it. Once you are on boost of course, then you will cain him.
I'm seriously thinking about a hybrid TD04 and sacrificing ultimate bhp for real world driveability...

In real terms, the car with the TD05 would be far quicker due to the massive accelaration difference in the two.
The increase in 'shove' far outweighs the lag
The VF35 is a great turbo with excellent response (not quite as good as a well mapped TD04) and in my case produces more than enough performance..!
DD @ 348x333 with 1 bar@ 2900 and full boost (1.45) @ 3200 in 4th with a fully warmed system. Holds 1.3bar @6k too..!..
The 54 plate Carrera S I had a play with last night felt the brunt of these figures..
A little porting of ex housing and headers also helps.
take a look at the last few pages of Floyds thread in projects..

So what about a hybrid TD04?
What sort of figures would that produce? Could you get a solid 300/300 with it?
I thought a VF35 gave only slightly more lag over a TD04?
And to add a forth the VF28 from a P1.
I'm assumimg we're looking for a quick driveable car rather than chasing big nubmers?

Imagine the situation, tight roundabout, in 2nd low revs. A nice light classic with a TD04, decat etc circa 270bhp will made car lengths from you before that slower spooling VF24 gets boost (circa 3k and full 3.5k) then you will start to bring them in.
If had a 6 speed box with lower ratios this may not be as pronounced but with the current 5 spd my car will be slower in real world performance. You have to think more about your gear selection when you have a trubo that's at optimum 3.5 to 4k plus.

just had VF30 ported headers and uprated fuel pump at api followed by ecutek remap. its running around 320bhp mark and is amazing. had a TD04 on my uk classic. the car is a lot smoother, not much lag and great fun as it flys now LOL. VF turbos are great in my opnion.

Knowing you Mark, I'd put on a TD05 18G. We did one for a local Doctor including; STi 5 cams, STi injectors, decat, teK 3 and so-on and it flies. We also put in STi 7 pistons because the WRX ones are a bit fragile and the forged STi 7 originals will take more timing load & boost.
