Unhappy Intercooler/pipes or both replacements???

Hi All,
Well I have a problem... was wondering what could cause my intercooler pipes to break??? I know that even though they are old... wear and tear what can I do to resolve this problem... maybe get a metal connector?
Bearing in mind my car is a STi V2 MY96 and I have a skew intercooler with a TD05H 16G side entry turbo... what are my alternatives?
Here are some pics of the damage, which has occurred twice when running 1.2 bar/16-17psi for few short durations... could it be the intercooler which is the bottleneck???
I am not gonna fork out R1.4k to buy another pipe and this happens again.
check my post - Intercooler replacement? - SOCSA - Subaru Owners Club South Africa for the pics of what happened

Many thanks for the valuable input.
