A gang of robbers threatened a man and his five-year-old son with an axe and machete before stealing his car.
Lancashire police say it is likely that the driver was followed home by the thieves, who targeted his Subaru Impreza on Sunday.
Two masked men confronted the man with the weapons when he arrived home at Loveclough Park, Rawtenstall.
They drove off in the car, but later lost control and crashed it at the Queens Square roundabout.
