Default Prodrive, H&S or TSL backbox

Hello,

I'm new into tuning business and I'd like to start off with a good backbox for my stock WRX MY05. Here're my priorities:
- It should give me this nice boxer sound without being too loud and offensive for my wife and two small kids, especially during long motorway trips.
- As much HP gain as possible
- Original design with round tailpipe
- Preferably one of the three: Prodrive, H&S (Scoobysport), TSL gr. N

Which one would you recommend? How would you line them up on the loudness scale? Note that I might go for full/partial de-cat in the future so the loudness of the backbox is a key factor for me.

BTW. Does anyone know what the HP gain is of uprated (e.g. H&S) resonated center pipe (long one) over the stock center pipe? Is there any point replacing it?

Thanks,
WoGut

TBH mate just changing the back box wont give you much in the way of gains - maybe a few bhp at most.

you really need a full decatted or a partial decat and sports cat to achieve a decent gain and then you'd really need a remap.

if you want something quiet i really can recommend a Magnex - my buddy has one and it sounds lovely

Sure, I know a backbox won't give much, but I have to start with something De-cat plus re-map are in my plans too, but I need to wait about 1,5 years until the warranty expires.

magnex are quite subdued but have a nice deep rumble.

if you get a decat it will make it more noisey - just make sure you get a resonated section

i've just fitted a tsl group n backbox to my newage (but with centre section and 2nd decat)

its not noisy but sounds great!
the backbox is a work of art perfect fit, top quality welding etc. (i'm a enginner so i am a bit picky when it comes to quality)

I've got a H&S jap style back box also H&S centre de-cat and sounds prety loud but not as loud as my mates full Blitz system, nice on tick over and excellent roar on take off..

Could be a bit loud for u ,from what i've been reading from ur threads,

I've also heard the Tsl firestorm and that's quite loud as well.....

Was out with someone at weekend who had a Magnex back box and was revving it at lights and to me did'nt sound like a subaru,if u know what i mean no burbble....

If u wanting nice sound on drive and pretty normal on tick over i'd go for the Prodrive....

But if like me ur not bothered bout neighbours, and wife and kids in the back not being able to hear u ,go for the H&S ,i've no complaints, think it's perfect, just right for a subaru.....nice and loud.....

These are just my opinons though, others may and will be different....

So on a 1-10 loudness scale: stock bb (1) -> prodrive (3) -> tsl gr. n (5) -> h&s (6)
Something like that, right?

im have a tsl back box along with ppp hi flow down pipe and ppp 2nd de-cat pipe on my 05 sti.....sounds great out side without being over loud inside,a very good everyday package imho.
my last car was a ppp wrx04 and i have to say it sounded great as well but i recon the tsl box is a tad loud'er with more burble......the scoob before that was a fully decatted clasic,it sounded the best of all but very loud!
as for performance the ppp or tsl boxes work really well with remaps so they wont hold you back in any power gains in the future.

Just recently fitted the racebox back box from scoobyworld with centre and cat pipe.

Nice and subtle on tickover and normal driving but sounds great when you put your foot down

The look of it is similar to the prodrive and build quality is second to none.

When you consider the TSL item is just £175 it sounds a bargain (pun intended)

I just noticed on the H&S site that they lowered the price of original design bb to £233.
Now, I think it's a matter of H&S or TSL. Is the H&S much louder than TSL? How would you compare build quality of these two? Which one to choose considering comparable price level?

I have full H&S decat on blobeye- not deafening but loud enough to be heard! Flat-four bark on hard load. But havent heard full decat TSL to be honest

Workmanship and quality second to none- i personally wouldnt want anything else

I've just stuck a grp n on my 05 WRX, and the deep tone is great. With just a backbox, it isn't that much louder than stock.
The missus loves the new noise, and says she can feel it through the seat at tickover.
The new grp n has a 4" tailpipe that looks the dogs.

I only really wanted a 3.5" tail pipe.
Are they both 3" inlets?

Default BACK BOX

I purchased a tsl group n back box for my 94 wagon and well happy !! fits perfect is made 100% perfect and sounds good , not to loud as my 2yr daughter has to sit in the back but good enough and well cheap price compared to others . h&s is a lot louder then mine as my mate has one on his 95wrx , so choice is yours !! ive just added a tsl center decat aswell , bit louder now but not by much - goes better too !

Default box

It does pop and bang but only after fitting the center decat ! if you said standard was 1 then id say tsl about 3-4 ! tsl afterburner about 5 , ninja 5 , h&s 6 , hks 9 , blitz 10 ! the tsl has a nice deep tone but not too much on long runs , if i didnt have daughter then i would have a saloon and a blitz !!!

TSL Grp N does it for me.
I've had Prodrive, Magnex, Scoobysport (H&S) and finally TSL Grp'N'

Prodrive was nice, but found it a bit quiet after a while

Magnex seemed to hang too low, you could see over the top of the silencer between the tailpipe and bumper. Which looked a bit pants. And it was a little boomey.

H&S was well made, but not a nice as the TSL. It sounded OK but a little boomey and a bit like a VW camper with a loud exhaust at tickover.

Grp 'N' was best quality, best fit and best sound.
Nice crackle when you floor it, not too noisey when you don't

With a H&S decat downpipe and H&S decat centre is measured 97dB.
With a H&S decat downpipe and H&S resonated decat centre is measured 95db.

currently driving with the latter......

If it helps I'm 36 and the car is main family car (well it has 4-doors and a boot, who needs a people carrier) and gets used with Wife and 2 kids under 5.

Yeah sound it nice, they are quiet compared to other systems but obviously louder than standard.. flows well and is 3inch all the way through though.. but downpipe is not ideal..
I used middle and backbox from Revolution.. altohugh on boost noise is difficult to judge as I have a screamer pipe.

Sorry to jump in but I have a H&S Jap style back box (Miltek closed DP and centre section)

Anyway, I was wondering if the TSL back box would give my car a more pronounced unequal burble?

I like the H&S and I really like the angled exit look it gives but I heard a scoob earlier today in town which had a very pronounced burble which is what I would prefer.

I do find the H&S tends to drown out the burble through shear noise.
