my mates p1 is in getting a rebuild after melting a piston hes getting cosworth (finnaly seen the light ) pistons .25 overbore stainless manifolds 3" downpipe magnex with no cats lightened flywheel. my question is should he get it mapped before running it in or will it be ok to get it mapped after the 1k mark plus who whould be the best to map it ?

I'd at the very least put a base map in it with limited boost and conservative timing. To be safe...

The fuel rails are fine.

STis benefit from a better fuel pump. The standard one can maintain flow but not necessarily pressure - this can lead to leaning out.

There may be other issues - but if you think it is fuel delivery related this would be the most straightforward solution - fit a Walbro and decent regulator.

Replace the MAF and definitely get it remapped. If it was decatted before and not remapped then he was asking for it I'm afraid.

 

The 'issue' with the standard fuel rail, if there is one, is as follows. When the problem described by Rannoch above occurs, the serial fuel rail leaves cylinder number three (at the end of the line) with the lowest fuel pressure, causing to it run lean. In this circumstance converting to a parallel feed from the regulator would stop the disparity but it wont solve the cause; which is insufficient fuel pressure.

i've just went through a rebuild on my MY98 type r and asked andy f about when would be the best time for a remap
answer was "as soon as it's been run in"

i did not go above 3000 rpm for the first 500 miles then 3500 after that for the next 500, this was the advice from the garage i went to for running it in
and i'm sure folk will have their own views on this....

the engine will be ok as you wont be putting it under any strain as you wont be using boost.

a walbro fuel pump and a fpr was fitter after the rebuild with a h & s 3" full decat, along with a apexi remap from mr f

very happy with it now,the v6 engine pulls like a good un
