Went to subaru today for and spare key, 75 f'ing quid!!! I was near over the counter with disbelief and my voice going higher pitched each time I said "how much????". Is there an alternative (other than a big mallet)? I told him i would come back when I get paid (twice).

Get one cut and coded from a 3rd party, anywhere between £20 - £60.

Replacement key for a Focus cost me £120 ! Seems to be all the rage now charging an extortionate amount for keys. I am looking for a A3 or Golf at the moment and I actually try to check if there are 2 keys or not as I know a replacement will be an arm and a leg.

Anyways good news is replacement key for my classic Scooby, grand total of £2

 

Interesting. On my old UK car I had a ket with a plastic surround which I guess housed something to do with the immoboliser. Is this why a key needs to be "coded"?

However, my new car (an STi 6) just has a normal metal key and no plastic. Does this mean that the Jap imports don't have a factory fitted immoboliser?

 

er.. no, it means the key doesnt hold the code for it. I dont actually know if it has one or not, but it could be in a fob

 

There's no fob - just a plain key is all that is needed to start the car.

 

Yep, just asked as I need one for the Passat I have just got. £150 I can see sellers being knocked down on price in the future if there is only 1 key, wish I had known before I collected the car as I would have tried

 

On my UK classic key the immobiliser sender is the plastic of the key, no fob and no pressing of buttons. It works each time you put the key in the ignition it disables the factory immobiliser (at the bottom of the clocks is a small key type symbol with a red led by it, key out led flashes / solid red, key in led goes out). Believe the electronics in the key are trickle charged each time you put the key in the ignition.
