Default Engine Oil Sump

I run a 1994 wrx ra rally car and an unfortunet incident saw the sump become damaged. i purchased a new one but when i came to take the old one off i found the engine/suspension crossmember blocking access to some of the bolts that need removing. Is there a procedure for removing it? subaru's dealer manual talks as if you have to remove engine, surely not?!?!

You can get to the rear bolts using a 10mm 1/4 drive socket and a Universal Joint - It's a bit fiddly though

or release the mounts and lift the engine up slightly to allow more access
