Default Newbie 93 wrx (with odd rattle!) looking 4 volenteer

Hello guy/gals i have just aquired a 93 wrx and yesterday while in brighton i noticed a odd rattle. if i rev the engine between 2-3k from under the bonnet ther is a definate metalic sounding rattle...

also when giving it some on lift off there is another noise i am unsure of (the guy i got it from says its the wasegate?

i was looking for somebody local to me in swindon to come round or i can come to you. have a little listen/come out for a drive and tell me what sounds are normal and what sound are ab-normal.

car is runnin 1.2 bar of boost but in 5th is massivly overboosting to the point of fuel cut (1.5bar+).

the car still pulls fine and drives fine but as a new owner i just am unsure!!!..

car has (so i am told)

Aftermarket ECU which was remapped to raise boost and this ECU automatically derestricts the car.

Full stainless down and centre pipes (both without the cats) and a race Exhaust

turbo timer

Triple Guages in din slot

Said to be running @ 280bhp

Please get back to me if u have a spare hour!!!!

Thanks

Darren

Gotta be a Heatshield mate Mine did it till i ripped it off.

There's a fair few but mine was the at the bottom of the manifold.Could be the turbo heatshield as these loosen up over time.

For the doom and gloom reply

It could be the big ends..
That gives a nasty metallic rattle as you gently rev it.
Sorry

Ditto what Fuzz says. My 98 STi had the same noise and it got louder and louder. It´s now having a rebuild!

If API have seen the car and say its piston slap then its piston slap mate.
Everyone on here will probably say API for a rebuild and they are all probably right

Hi,m8,I've just got a 93wrx in last few weeks and now the engine is in bits,it had the same problem as yours, but when we took it apart the crankshaft was knackered and the big ends, also the piston 3&4 rings had worn away,Just hope yours isn't the same.Costly!!(Im now skint)

Thanks for the vote of confidence - much appreciated. I haven't seen the car but from the details given I reckon it's piston slap. The pointer will be either oil consumption or noise remaining when the engine is hot. It may also be noisy hydraulics, but I'd be reluctant on an older car to try our trick of a putting in litre of ATF to the engine to clean them out. It may just finish off an engine on its last legs.

Either way, unless the engine fails with big ends, it's probably worth leaving well alone until it does or does not develop. Why go looking for trouble??
