Hi,
The heat shield covering the downpipe on my 98 classic turbo has rusted (or broken away) and is now rattling.
My dealer has quoted £500 just for parts which will have to include new downpipe and cat. This is outrageous!
The dealer says it doesn't really do much either and won't damage car in short term, but the rattle is driving me insane.
What options do i have? Is is easy (and safe) to just remove it?

That is f**king ludicrous. Even in if the downpipe is knackered - which it very well may not be - £500 is too much by quite a bit. My heatshield was rattling a few months ago and my garage fixed it for free, so trivial a job was it.

That's what I thought and my downpipe (as far as i am aware) is fine.
Where is you garage and what can I do now?

 

The downpipe will have to be removed to perform an effective repair, the heatsheild spot welds rust, this is how they attatch it to the downpipe,
I have just replaced mine for this reason with other mods.
Group-buy on Nija 100 cell cat downpipe is the way to go, or repair your old one, it's not difficult to remove, if all the nuts come off the turbo studs without snapping.

why not heat wrap the turbo,problem sorted and you could do it youself

 

The dealer is taking the P1 michael.
If you want to retain the car standard, second hand good quality D/P £50.
a local exhaust depot will fit. Not more than £50, probably less so change out of £100 total.
OR
D/P off. Cut off heat shiels, DEI exhaust wrap and refit. Might cost a little more than £100.
OR
If you want a cheap repair and just want to stop the rattle, double strand and twirl some tie wire. Put it round the heat shield and using tie wire pliers pull it tight.
