open/closed deck - can i tell from the outside?

hi all..as above is there a way to tell if i have an open or closed deck with removing the heads or engine, are there any markings ect...i dont know the year of manufactor of the engine sorry

the hatching on the heads is also on the front and back of a closed deck block.

The only way to tell with the engine in the car is to look at the
Oil filter casting on the block - should have cross hatching on it for a Closed Deck Block.
