Default GC8 exhausted...

Hi, im trying my best to get my GC8 back on the road.
Im doing the engine work myself with the help of a very good workshop CD ROM i got
from eBay and a big hammer!!! (ok ...joking about the hammer)
and a very helpful mate in the parts dept of the local dealer.

Got a few questions for the wise.....

Im cutting out my cat and silencers to have straight thru system.
I have all the gear to weld etc and my own workshop.
What grade pipe would you suggest i use for the cat pipe replacement?
Has anyone ever made an exhaust manifold from scratch??
Any tips on what not to do?

What paint would anyone suggest i use to spruce up the engine while its out?
Am painting Block, heads and rockers.

thats it for now,

Thanks all.

Why? Even for a competition car, wouldn't it be too loud for events?

I get the impression that the entire exhaust system is designed to optimise flow and reduce back pressure. The curvature, diameter and length of the manifold is pretty critical (but I don't know to what end).

Sorry I can't be more help, hopefully someone will come along who has more expertise.
