and what a superb experience it was

Very professional setup, friendly staff and an excellent dive enviroment.

After a few comments on here I was worried about the water temperature and i'm sure this issue puts many people off diving in this country. I wore a 7mm wetsuit with hood, gloves and shoes and I didn't feel the cold at any time during the dive.

I shall now do a lot more diving here as although there wasn't much to see apart from the interesting wrecks, very few fish compared to warm waters (and even if there was some to see you couldn't have due to the visibility being pretty poor ) However there were some Pike which are beautiful fish underwater (ugly as **** out of it )

It felt a challenging & interesting experience and one I think all divers would benefit from doing. It cost me £80 for the 2 dives with a qualified instructor, I think thats pretty reasonable.

I am a qualified diver but have no experience in cold water so the £80 was for an 'orientation' (sp?) of stoney cove. He was a qualified instructor but it was made quite clear he was not there to teach me but to show me the dive environment and how to dive it.

So there was some teaching involved regarding the local dive environment but no regarding procedures and things I have already learnt. Although he had to be happy with me and my knowledge & ability before I started diving.

I certainly learnt a lot from it whether he was a teacher or not.

Well done chop, although I think someone charging £80 to show you round Stoney was flipping expensive.

If they bought you a bacon sarnie and a cuppa between dives and a meal and a pint in the pub afterwards as an all in deal then maybe not so bad

I first thought £80 but I was there from 8.30 till 2.30, learnt a lot but most of all felt that I was diving in a safe environment with people that knew what they were doing, for me I can't put a price on that.

I think you must have gone soft I never felt the cold at all, but then I am hard as nails

Stop being so bloody alarmist. Diving like many other pastimes carries a degree of risk and inevitably tragedies occur but you don't see reports of the other 60,000 odd people who dive there every year and live to tell the tale.

 

60,000 dives take place there a year, it's bound to happen from time to time whenever human error is a factor imo

Im perfectly aware that there's 60,000 dives a year there thanks, however, one death a year on average seems just a tad high.

As for "alarmist" I prefer factual, as in my request for facts rather than chinese whispers dumbass

 

It would seem to be perfectly obvious that as the accident only occurred this morning, the authorities haven't had time to fully investigate the incident let alone publish their findings so on that basis any information you receive will be nothing more than 'chinese whispers' rather than factual.

Given that the majority of divers there will be undertaking some form of training, for which read 'lack of experience' in their respective training regimes then accidents will and do occur.

Of course, applying a little bit of logic is far harder than shrieks of outrage.
