Default Engine hesitation cut out on full throttle

I have a Jap import 94 WRX Wagon, which as far as I'm aware is standard with the exception of a S/S exhaust (with the cats still in place).

An engine problem has arisen recently. When accelerating hard (ie on full throttle) the engine suffers from massive hesitation and almost cuts out at around 5k rpm. This happens irrespective of what gear I'm in. Changing up a gear / easing of the throttle stops this, but on a more gentle throttle application I (think) I can feel a slight hesitation between 5/6k rpm. All this appears to only happen when the engine is warmed up, but for preservation of the engine I clearly don't want to test this too much when the engine is cold.

For info if I accelerate more sedately, building up the revs - to & beyond 5k rpm there doesn't appear to be a problem. Also, the engine in all other respects appears to be running Ok - ie starting, idling, normal driving etc.

Any info / advice gratefully received.

Chris

PS - Have done a search and found some similar posts, but never quite sure if this is the same problem as others.

either coil packs, or oil in the boost control solenoid, or you are over boosting and hitting fuel cut which may be related to the boost control solenoid needing a clean. Most likely anyway
