Default Help. Car nearly killed me, electrics failed.

Second time this has happened, driving along at a pace, came out of gear took foot off the accelerator and the engine does dead along with the electrics.

Meaning me going fast with no electrics to the stearing or more importantly the brakes.

Both times I've been pretty lucky but I don't want to push my luck.

It's a 99 UK Scoob, the cut out isn't the same as a stall. Tested stalling the car and the check engine light doesn't come on under those conditions.

Both times this happened the check engine light came on and the car required the immobalizer clicking before turning the ignition back on. Then it was business as usual.

After the first time, I had the knock sensor replaced and the ecu resetting. That was 2 months ago.

Any ideas?

Electric steering and brakes !!!!

What you drving, a sinclair C5 ?

Anyway, is the battery moving and shorting against anything ?

Had this happen on a GT4, would cause a total loss of electrics as it arced, this would probably initiate your imobliser

Check all your main electric points, fuses battery connections, earthing connections etc, could just be a loose cable!

I've got it booked in for new discs and pads so i'll have a word about it when I put it in for that.

I have to agree, your brakes dont STOP working, there is no servo assitance, but you can brake in one continuous action AFTER the engine has stalled, once you release the vacume has gone and you have no assitance, the brakes do still work though..

As for steering, it still works just fine, just a little heavy.. How do you think we coped before power steering??

Does EVERYTHING go off, i.e. zero lights on the dash?? If there are still some lights on then it could be the imoboliser cutting in, if everything is dead then check the main wiring harness under the dash (the one that goes to the ignition switch).. wiggle the key to and make sure it doesnt cut the power.

Also check the connection on the back of the alternator, starter motor and battery. Oh and check the main fuses under the bonnet for play.

You say the engine light came on?? Therefore you havent lost power?

read the error codes.. connect the black connectors under the dash and read the code

Error Codes
An Error code is defined as a slow flash followed by fast flash
i.e 2 slow and 3 fast = 23 Mass Airflow sensor.
A continuous on/off at the same speed is no fault found.

Code Fault
11 Crankshaft position sensor

12 Starter switch

13 Camshaft position sensor

21 Engine coolant temperature sensor

22 Knock sensor

23 Mass air flow sensor

24 Idle air control solenoid

31 Throttle position sensor

32 Oxygen sensor

33 Vehicle speed sensor 2

35 Purge control solenoid valve

42 Idle switch

44 Wastegate control solenoid valve

45 Pressure sensor / Pressure exchange solenoid valve

51 Neutral position switch
