Default 6 Speed Box to replace 5 Speed ???

I would say after owning my RA for a week now, that it's not a good car for long motorway driving, due to the high gearing.
I think a 6th gear would benefit it.

Is it possible to put a six speed box into a 95RA?
If so, what's involved/required?

I dont need any daft comments, although I'm sure to get them!

Thanks in advance

The box, the right propshaft, the 6 speed shifter mechanism.
The rear diff ratio to suit (probably a 3.9 but check first)
Best get a 'Group N' transmission mounting to stop the box hitting the tunnel as it is very close from the ones I've seen.

It is very very heavy so a good strong 'disposable' mate or a transmission jack is a must too.

Finally, a cheque for about £1500 to buy the bits.(non DCCD version)

What sort of BHP/Torque can the 6 speed take?

I acknowledge there may not be an exact figure but what sort of power are you guys running with these 6 Speed boxes?

Because I like a few on here are flipping a coin between PPG & 6 Speed.

(No attempt to hijack the thread intended - just thought it may be relevent)

I think the 6 speed is rated at around 500 bhp/torque, Why not just get someone to put a taller 5th gear in like out of a uk box??

Im looking at type r's myself, i belive they have the same box as the ra's, i figured they wouldnt be too hot on motorway journeys, not too many motorways up here so if you dont mind a wee highjack, what are they like cruising at 60??

I have a 6 speed in my 94wrx. We needed a 6speed box, prop from an auto and a 3.9 rear diff, but I think you may have a 3.9 diff already fitted. A small amount of machining was needed to fit the starter but other than that a straight fit. To me, 6th gear feels the same as the standard 5 speed top gear. I think they are just closer ratioed.

If the car is quite std you could buy and cheap UK/WRX box with nice ratios and flog yours. That way it wont cost anything and you could even pocket a few quid.

Thanks mate, i guess thats not too bad, i think either fitting a normal sti box or a taller final drive would be the way to go, all depends on how tricky/long it takes to change a box. Anyone got a rough idea?

If it is your first time changing an Impreza box, working in a domectic garage (axle stands etc) and on your own (trust me, no mate will want to be part of this job) then expect a very hard day to get it off/out; change the clutch (silly not to) and bolt another back in.

These transmissions are heavy and awkward.

Some heros on here will say they can pop one out/in in a morning.

I've done mine 3 times in these conditions and 3 rear diffs too and that = a weekend.(each!)

What is the code on your gearbox? It should be stamped on the plate on the NSF suspension strut. Once we know the diffs front and rear then you can work out the cost effective options.

I think you've got a 3.9 front and rear diff, so the 6 speed is an easy swap, as long as you source a jap one pre 06 then you don't have to change the rear diff. Some come with DCCD and some without, if you find one with DCCD it will run OK without the controller, just that it'll be fully open (which typically it always is set to on the road). The jap ones have shorter 5th and 6th compared to UK, the jap will be just under 4krpm @80mph in 6th. If you want lower revs then you'll have to source a UK 6 speed and a UK diff.

What could be easier is to source a UK or STI TY752 gearset and rebuild your box, the rpms in top gear will be similar to those mentioned above, again the UK being longer geared
