Question Possibly engine retarded after re-build - but why ??

Afternoon Team

I've got a question to ask on behalf of a mate who has just rebuilt his engine due to MAF failure before he bought it..... this is his second scoob rebuild so he is quite knowledgeable but he has an issue that he just can't resolve.

This is a copy of what he has sent me by e-mail....

my99 s reg uk wagon...everything standard.....

recent engine rebuild...had died on piston 2...partial seizure..ring damge etc
runing in...had rock oil in...now on semi..soon to be on fully
hesitation...esp when cold but can feel when warm..between 2 and 3 thou..
can feel it not pulling clean as if retarded..and assume it is so
had full service...new leads, new maf, no trouble codes...ecu been reset
swopped lambda out of my 98 uk car
been at scoob after rebuild for reset and quick checkover
been on auto diagnostic place, emissions great...
no faults found....but was very warm...
stripped timing gear, checked valve timing...
checked replaced plugs

now the good bit...i moved the knock sensor after the last oil change..way out the way, not on block
it drove awful for one night..then next morning..wow its a new car...free and drives lovely..
after 3 days...it started to come back
i put another knock sensor on it, in the proper place...reset ecu following the connectors together...drive nice for a bit till flashes and then take apart routine
drove quite free but bad hesitation b4 boost...

nad now its just hesitant and feels sluggihs ..retarded...

move the sensor out of way and reset?

engine is mint, no slap in morn..did knock a bit for few secs cos of the thicker oil....but changed it and soon to be on the sexy stuff...

eeeeeeelp...lol..im outa ideas..it got be knock sensor affected...

He somehow manages to type in a yorkshire accent as well
Any ideas guys ??
He does come on the forum but very rarely so I said I'd ask the question for him and see if we can get any joy.

Regards
Simon

valve timing checked guys...all bob on...

was a good idea tho....

sometimes its nice to drive soemtimes it aint...

i was thinking possible over sensitive knock sensor readings when cold due to the oil in at pres and it takes till driven quite a bit to self learn shes not knocking etc and thus drives ok...

all older scoobs tend knock or slap a bit from cold generally. its like the pre fill the oil filter jobby when you do an oil change otherwise it does simular to the car..the sports had this mega bad....

only theory mind..lol..

Have you tried replacing the ECU temp sensor and check the connector isnt damaged, if that is working intermitantly it will cause problems with ignition timing & fueling.
