i have a my98 uk car i have bin offered an ecu from same yr model type r would this ecu make any difference to my bhp and r these ecu reprogramable any help much appreciated

If you use the ecu from the type r, the only thing that will do is blow your engine due to running too much ignition advance and is mapped for higher octane fuel.
The ECU from a my98 type r cannot be remapped, only MY99 onwards can the standard ecu be remapped using ecutek software.

the sti my98 ecu will not even run a my 98 uk car, things like injector size, MAF type, turbo, crank and cam position pins are all different so its not worth it.

save up for an apexi power fc, that when mapped will give you sti power
