Stupid question time coming up

I want to price up concreting a garage.

Area is approx 84 sq meters and I would like 4-5 inches depth.

What will my costs be for all the mix. Sand, gravel ,cement qty.

By concreting a garage, you mean that you're going to build forms and make the whole garage out of concrete?

For 84 sq metres with a thickness of 125mm, you're going to need the following quantities.

3360 Kg of cement
6615 Kg of sand
12285 Kg of gravel

 

I assume that you want to form a concrete base of 85 m2 @ 5" deep.

84m2 x 0.125m = 10.5m3

10.5m3 = 17.5 Tonnes

If you are prepared to mix ballast ( sand & gravel mixed at ratio of 2:1 ) with ordinary portland cement, you'll need the following:

116 bags of cement and apprx 14 tonnes of ballast.

I would suggest that you order the ballast direct from a quarry, through a builders merchant and order the cement from them as a yard delivery.

I would certainly suggest that you use a good platiciser and would recommend a sika branded product. Don't forget the visqueen layer underneath, normally supplied in a 100m2 roll and ask for 1200 gauge.

If you compare the costs of buying the raw materials and mixing it with a mixer against buying readymix concrete you'll save half but it depends how much your' time is worth.

Also worth considering sectioning the project and using a decent expansion joint material between section such as flexcell and filcrete. Once you've done all this and it's allowed to dry, make sure that you put a good few coats of dustproofer/hardener on.

p.s: It may be worth laying steel mesh reinforcing sheets aswell just in case at same point you decide to use the base as a base for living quarters.

I am looking to simply concrete a floor in a built garage.
I was going to mix it myself and just baton off sections in the garage and use them to level off the mix

I wouldn't bother mixing that amount, you'll be there for ever. Work on the first cubic metre at £120??, the remaining metres on the load at £40??. I'm not sure how many metres per delivery, or if the £120 first metre applies to the next wagon on the same order. I did some myself about 2 years ago, and me and 3 other lads barrowwed 4 C metres about 40yds from the road to the garden, and had it level in about 3 hrs.

You will need a supplier that is happy to tip into barrows though, you may pay a slight premium for this, though with enough lads and barrows it's easy enough.

 

I work for a builder, and he pays roughly £55 ish per metre...... the firm we use have 6mtr lorries..... so for the amount repquired, it'd be two trucks, no way would i mix that amount by hand, but, i'm not sure i'd be too excited at the prospect of levelling that amount either.... even in two hits....

 

That area is big enough to park about 9 cars, are you sure thats correct?
