After recently finding out that the oil symbol / warning light in the dash is for "show" only and doesn't monitor anything but maybe the migrating habits of brown neck mallards, my annoyance has moved on elsewhere in the dash area.



The fuel gauge always shows how much petrol is in the tank, key in the ignition or not?

I knew the Japanese were at the cutting edge of technology, but I'm really impressed with this recent finding. If only all car manufacturers use the cork in the tank technique then thousands could be saved on production!

Balasted fuel gauges remain on permenently because they take so long to level after you switch the ignition on.

 

The dash oil pressure warning light is linked to the oil pressure switch in the main block oil gallery...this switch is set to trigger IIRC at around 2.5bar...unfortunately this pressure is lower than the minimum pressure required to prevent bearing damage. If the warning light comes on while the engine is running (not at start up, but when your driving the car for example) it's too late, the damage to the big ends/mains will have already happened and there will already be some interesting rattling/knocking noises eminating from your engine bay...

It's note really a warning light, more a 'your engine's died, sorry' light

 

the really impressive thing is, i took a set of clocks out of a car, put them in a cupboard for a month and they still registered 1/4 of a tank!!!

yeah i suppose it is good to know how much fuel is in the tank before you switch on the ignition,but god those jap dials are a whole lot cooler..

Just checked the one's I've had sitting here Since Sept. and sure enough, just over half a tank

 

mine is reading 3/4 s and there hasnt been a tank in it for 3 months ...also when i took the tank out i only got 2 gallons out of it ....great short changed by the japs again
