Good afternoonshire, I am just about to buy a Hayward & Scott downpipe for MY00 and I'd like to know if its important to wrap it first in heat tape and will it fit to the turbo without losing the heatshields. What sort of noise difference could I expect once fitted? I already have a H&S Afterburner vortex and Pipercross panel filter and am hoping to get a few pops and bangs once installed!!
Good choice, I'm going to get one for mine soon (after next MoT
) to go with the rest of my H&S system.
Wrapping the downpipe seems to be a favourable option, keeping uncessary heat out of the engine bay and especially away from the intercooler is always a good idea. Get the wrap from here http://www.agriemach.com/ should get a discount if you mention SNet. It's also worth giving it a spray with some high temp paint once wrapped, stops the wrap soaking up water and generating plumes of steam from your bonnet on a damp day.
It should also be possible to re-fit the heat shields though they will need to be trimmed a bit to fit around the wider open neck pipe.

I have one on my sti 4 and it's well wrapped with wrap from www.agriemach.com they will give you a 20%discount if you mention scoobynet.I sprayed mine aswell, still steams and smells a bit when it's damp.
The heatshields wont fit back on without modification, but I believe tht will be the same with any aftermarket downpipe.
As for noise can't really say cos I fitted wrapped headers at the same time.I certainly get a few pops.

I put one on my sti5 and its a top piece of kit IMO. It'll free up quite a few ponnies and will add a bit of noise in the process.
I remember it made the car a fair bit louder but you get used to it.
As for heat shield and wrapping, the shield will go back on but you need to trim it a little as mentioned above. I wrapped mine too but couldn't comment on how effective this is as it was done before it went on.
