Unhappy Burning oil smell in car

When I have the heating on in the car I get the smell of burning oil.
It does not happen when the AC is on and appears worse when it blowing cold air (that could just be me though) and when the car is registering normal operating temp.

I have looked under the bonnent and cannot see any obvoius oil leaks, where I have found some drips of oil was under the std intercooler which I have now removed and cleaned, again on obvious source. Any idears, where it could be comming from?

The other thing which I have noticed is that when it is raining and the vehicle is up to temp, but stationary steam comes up from the bonnet scoope, it this normal?

As you can tell I am new to subarus I have only owned this car for 1500 miles and its my first.

Its a 98 impreza wagon turbo.

Cheers

John

Usual problem is oil weaping from the cam covers and dripping onto the exhaust manifold, normally drivers side. Could also be the crankshaft oilseal leaking and oil blowing back onto the exhaust.

Okay, I took it out for a drive today, until the smell started, then pulled over and hand a look under the bonnet again. There is some oil comming from the drivers side camcover.

How difficult is it to replace this? things look very tight down there!. Is there an easy method to do this?

Cheers
