I had the same problem too. I looked under the pedal and there was a mouse there.

I had to coax it out with some cheese and hot dogs and I put it in my Neighbours MX-5.

We called it carol.

I think you'll find its the piston on the end of the clutch hydraulics??

Oddly enough I have this on my MX5 ................

Nowt to worry about

Think it depends on where you got. Had my clutch replaced last week and he did it by taking the gearbox out but did say it would be the same cost labour wise even if the engine did have to come out.

I bet its the clutch lever where it goes into the gearbox, if you take your intercooler off you will see a rubber boot at the top centre of your gearbox, lift it up and apply a small amount of WD40 whislt somebody pushes your clutch pedal in and out.
This should cure it.

I had an MX5 for 12 years, and the clutch slave cylinder does indeed squeak after about 3 years or so.
If you put the car on ramps, get a syringe and squirt a little brake fluid in behind the rubber boot on the Slave cylinder, the squeak completely dissappears for a year or two.
That was the most annoying problem in 12 years of ownership with that car, and the fix is so simple.
I may be the same on the Subaru
