Having looked around for a Blitz system for my classic, iv noticed considerably better prices on sites in the US. What are the disadvantages of purchasing an exhaust from there, or anywhere else for that matter ?

May not be direct answer, but in 1998 I had a friend who had an MX-5 and purchased both a rear exhaust box and a supercharger kit from seperate companies in the US. Both of them he arranged to be delivered to friends houses and he then, while in the US on holiday, bought them back to the UK on the plane as luggage and did not get stopped for tax although potentially should have been. Given the supercharger came in a box that was 6 foot long, it was pretty damn noticeable.

If you import it you will get stung for import tax/duties, so it all depends what it says on the invoice. Then they work out the tax. It could be cheaper in the long run, but you's take your chances...

 

unless you are getting them super cheap, it will probably cost you more than here.

add on delivery charges.
VAT 17.5% , and import duty varies by item type anywhere between 10% - 63% (inc delivery)
clearance charges (fixed fee normally around £10)

quite a few people buy stuff of ebay then get charged the above and the item works out more than buying in the uk in the first place.

you may possibly get away with the charges but on big items sent by courier that is very unlikely.

the alternative is if you know a usaf person based over here they can get stuff in the country without paying our taxes.
