Question 1995 wrx instrument cluster question

Just a quick question. Sorry if this sounds dumb, what is the central cut-out area between my speedometer and rev meter for? Its a long narrow section and I have never seen any lights come up in it, The reason I ask is that I have found a nice brushed aluminium dial surround for sale that has all the right areas cut out e.g. fuel, temp, speedo, revs, ect but not this central bar.
Any ideas???
