How often do you find yourself going for 7th gear?


Soooooo much oomph in 6th!

 

I dont own one, but when I had a test drive, I found that you were changing up gears ever so quickly due to the torque. I would think with a bit more practice that I would leave it in a higher gear and use all that low down grunt which comes in at 2k rpm in 3rd/ 4th/ 5th. There is still plenty on torque in 6th from 2.5k rpm.

XRS, If your running out of rpm in 6th you must be flying.

what a car though!!- just hope the bonus comes in.

I find i sometimes look for seventh in my sti, so i guess its even easier to do in a t25 or a spec c

 

 

Anyone that thinks they need a 7th gear in either a Type 25 or Spec C clearly is'nt driving it hard enough!

Try taking the car to the redline in 6th and then tell me you think it needs another gear (obviously not open to the out and out hoons of this world )

limited @ 155 is quite enough but then the other half kinda hurts me once above 100..........

When I got my JDM from Litchfields they said they normally limit them to 165 as the windows have a habit off trying to pop out above that speed.

I am more than happy with just 5 gears. it's geared to 200mph as it is which I believe is more than the type 25, and in the process it weighs 50kgs less than the 6 speed!

Not just type 25 drivers who keep grabbing extra gears.

 

Err, are you sure they weren't having you on? Took my Spec C to the 'ring at the weekend and speed tested it on the Autobahn. Got up to 175 mph with no traumas (other than running out of un-restricted road) and with about 1200 revs left to the red line. Has to be good for 190mph+ although acceleration wasn't quite as rapid as at 100mph (or 150mph for that matter)

 

Moving from the 5 speed box of my old STi IV I thought I'd have trouble getting used to the six speed. In fact it feels perfectly natural, except for occasionally going for 7th. I'm not talking highly illegal speeds here, but at more normal (fast) road speeds where the car accelerates so hard it feels natural to change up.

 

The ratios on the JDM six speed are just too short (fifth and sixth) to get anywhere near 190mph. Have a look at some of the threads where people have tried it they seem to be topping out around sometime after 150mph!

Remember the jap box is designed with ratios for a market which has a limit of 112mph.

I think your speedo might be a tad out or were you going downhill or had some wind assist?

Don't see how wind or slope would make any difference ... the speed of a car at a particular engine speed is fixed unless the car is skidding forwards. The only effect they would have is to make acceleration easier. Either way, the road was pretty level and I was going too fast to think about wind speed .

According this site the Spec C gear ratios with Potenza RE070 give a top speed of 187mph in sixth at 8250rpm ... so 190mph+ was a tad optimistic but not too far out.

The gearing might be for 190mph (but I have no idea on that to comment), but do you realise what kind of power would be needed to reach 190mph in a Scoob?! Damm site more than anything remotely standard...... of course unless yours is well over 500bhp.

I understood that the Spec-C was quoted at 160mph (true speed, not clock speed )in the press.

Haven't maxed a car for quite a few years now - probably when I was in my irresponsible 30s (or 40s) and tried a few high speed runs in the 3 door Cosworth. Slowed down now of course

You're right about the difference between true speed and clock speed ... the 175mph I saw was on the clock and I can't make any claims for the accuracy of the speedo in that vicinity (I'll try it with a GPS when we go back later in the year and let you know ...). We had about 2 miles of straight road to play in (starting around 120mph) and we topped out at an indicated 175mph before having to slow down for the corner.

Not sure you need as much as 500bhp to hit the 187 'theoretical max' ... that's 359bhp/ton! As a comparison the 996 GT2 has a measured top speed of 198mph with 'only' 339 bhp/ton and a .cd index of .31 compared to .33 for the scoob. But you're right that 187 needs more than my car has right now ...

Granted the top speed takes in to account more things then power as you quite rightly point out...... but power is a huge factor.

Of course assuming that the redline is at say 8k, does not mean you would reach that in any case in top gear unless you have enough power..... standard or otherwise.

For comparison (and I dont know the gearing or cd), but my old RS500 was 500bhp (approx 390bhp per ton) and similar cars of the same power would achieve a top speed of around the 180+mph mark. Apparently the power needed to go much above these types of speeds (based on a normal sedan body shape) would need to be increased by a much increased factor, since at a certain speed (again based on a normal sedan body) over 180 (but I am sure it's under 195) requires huge increases in hp, as you seem to hit a brick wall.

Something I will certainly not be trying............... well not for the next 6 months at least!

FWIW, I've compared the speedo on my JDM STI to a GPS receiver and it's very, very accurate - it over-reads by 1% at most. (That's on the standard wheels and 235/45/17 RE070 tyres).

I believe that when Powerstation remap the cars they set the limiter to 255 km/h, which works out at 158mph. The Ecutek software for the '05 ECU is still under development though, so they may have changed things since mine was last mapped. Either way, I can't say I've found the limiter a problem

 

Fair enough ... wasn't anywhere close enough to the 187 mark to claim differently so I'll stick to what I saw: 175mph on the clock with the speedo accuracy unverified. I'll take a GPS next time I go over to Germany and will post what it tells me then.
