The speedo has packed up on my MY98. The main dealer checked it out and said the sender was fine - which makes sense as the odometer is still working - so they want to change the head unit - but it's £420 just for the part.

My question is, if I get a unit from a breaker is it a simple case of plugging it in or is there anti-tamper stuff in there to get in the way?

I know some new cars have to have there electronics put into safe mode before you can touch this kind of stuff but don't know if this applies to classic Imprezas.

Yes it is so simple. I think speedo problems on MY98s are chronic.

Had to replace mine, it's not a difficult job.

Grade A Subaru supplied me with a used one for £100.
