Question Anyone had a blown engine? Type R Sti

Hello all Scoobynetters,

I am posting a request on behalf of friends who recently sold their MY99 Type R STi. The chap who bought it came back to them within 48 hours after having blown the engine. Now although this chap won't admit to thrashing the car, there are strong suspicions that he did. He's looking for compensation and is dishing out legal threats, blah, blah, blah.

Now, I'm hoping to get some kind of feedback on how common it is to blow STi engines, is it inevitable if the car is driven too hard? This car had around 40k on the clock and was highly cherished, immaculate in every way and although de-limited, their Scooby was never taken above 6000rpm. Timing belt had been replaced 2 weeks prior to sale and my friends can't believe the engine would give any trouble if driven sensibly.

Can anyone add their experiences here? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Would need to be run on at least super unleaded if shown any sign of abuse - they are programmed for 100 ron (jap) fuel, super is only 97 so det can be an issue.

If a private sale, then surely caveat emptor applies?

Was the oil changed at the cam-belt change as well (as incorrect filling of oil CAN lead to engine failure).

Thanks for the swift response Tony, I'll pass that on.
