Default Power Steering.

Is there a test that can be done on the power steering system to pinpoint a fault. My car a my94 has stiff steering every so often. I have topped up the fluid which has helped a little. When the steering is stiff the steering doesn`t centre it self when the wheel is released. Is replacing the steering rack an engine out job. Cheers.

The rack is accessed from under the car. No need to take the engine out.
Have you looked at the pump? It could be the problem.
