Default Towing an Impreza

OK I have heard that you are not supposed to tow any AWD vehicle if it breaks down for example cos it can do damage. I have read this in my manual - however it doesn't explain why doing this can cause problems ? I am not looking to tow my scoob this way and would always ask for a flatbed I'm just curious.....

Can anyone enlighten me please ?

Its to do with the diffs not sure exactly why but if you tow a car you wind up the diffs or somthing along those lines and it knackers them

is it to do with suspended tow, where either the front or rear wheels are suspended on a towing dolley/ tow truck etc.
That would cause wind up of the centre diff?
Can't imagine it would be a prob if all 4 wheels are on the road and turning when being towed. Only like freewheeling down a hill.

you can tow one but all 4 wheels have to be on the ground, you can not tow one with only 2 wheels on the ground.

Hmmm differing views here - I am quite surprised as I am sure I have been told before that you have to load a Scoob on a flat bed and not tow it, whether all 4 wheels or not ?

You just can't tow it with two wheels on the ground. If towing with four wheels was bad, the car would destroy itself in normal use too.

No problem towing a Subaru providing all four wheels are on the ground. However with a suspended tow, ie one axle lifted and one one on the ground you will destroy the centre differential.
