HELP ! Fumes in car ??? Feeling sick
Badly need some advice here folks.
Recently had some work done on the car and now I'm getting "fumes" in the car.
Sometimes it smells like petrol, sometimes like exhaust, sometimes just like nasty toxic...
A 45 minute commute is becoming unpleasant now, and the kids are feeling sick after 1/2 hour ...
I've had the car 2 1/2 years now and NEVER had prevoius problems like this (or any).
RECENTLY I had a sports cat downpipe fitted (and up-pipe), and I did notice that after fitment there were no heat shields on down pipe.
I was told that this was not a problem as the turbo has a heatshield - and would suffice.
I was also told that I might get a eggy smell on warming up (must admit had it once or twice).
Now... how the hell does all this fumes stuff get into the cabin ?
Aircon ? (which is usually on). Or what ?
Would it be a dodgy sealing gasket, and the exhaust leaking ?
Could it be something to do with the fact that I now have no heat shield over downpipe and fumes are rising and coming into the aircon ?
Where does the aircon suck it's air from ?
I cant believe that this is how all sports cat downpipes are supposed to work...
I mean " Yes Sir, great power but might choke you to death if you actually want to drive it Sir"...
Maybe its dodgy welds on the downpipe itself ?
Yes I will be having a chat (again) with the very friendly scooby experts who supplied and fit it but...
I would like to hear some other experienced opinions regarding heat shields and how fumes get in the car.
Today I drove with the aircon on recirc to stop any smells coming in, after 1/2 hour I needed some fresh air (London traffic) and switched to normal - and whoosh - nasty headspinning smells came in very strongly for 3-4 secs. Had to open the windows to clear the niff - nasty enough to leave you with a headache (which I get now most times I drive).
Advice / experiences please

ive just had a very similar problem with my car, it lasted for about 2 months
a garage tracked it down to a leaking petrol pipe next to the turbo, when the engine was on it has been spraying fuel out of the pipe , i was getting headaches but i assumed all my problems were lamda and exhaust related , how wrong i was . but its all fixed now.
hope its not the same with yours

same thing here last night.
tiny split in a fuel line that was venting fumes when it wanted to, not when supposed to. (might have something to do with 3 1/2bar atmos. fp).
fixed and in the words of outkast...
"im so fresh and so clean"
