Default Baku, Azerbaijan

Spotted the first ever Impreza in Azerbaijan last week.

Blue MY03/04 1.6TS, with high level spoiler at the rear, parked just down from Chaplins bar near the French Embassy.

I understand that theres a large contract underway at the moment. However, I would probably end up working for the BOT contractor.

Sorry for hijacking the thread John....

I'm based in Dyce at the moment - lumbered with doing the Hydrocarbon Accounting for the Forties and Brent Blend systems...not on my own I might add.
Originally a mech tech with some supervisory and pipeline operations experience so I have quite a wide range of skills...just need to find the right job. Did look seriously at a job in Algeria - maybe a bit warm for me though.

No problems with the Hijack. I wasn't expecting anyone to reply at all!!

I was out doing a bit of work for BP, so they can track who is offshore, survival certificates etc on the Chirag, and the new Central Azeri platform.

They do seem to look after their staff very well out there, with regards apartments, and the whole package. Weather is great most of the year, with a couple of very cold months, and a couple of very hot ones. No problems with insects etc.

Taxi's are very cheap ($2 anywhere in the city centre), and great fun once you get used to the fact that none have seatbelts, most have broken windows, bald tyres, and the drivers have a well developed horn finger/thumb. I wouldn't recommend driving out there, even in a local car.

Drinks - plentiful and reasonably priced. Got rather drunk one night

Nice to know that things out in Baku are perhaps not as bad as they may have been made out to be John.

Yes,

it's a very friendly and safe place - much safer than most cities in the UK for walking about in the evenings. It is a place of contrasts though - most of the people there are very very poor - living on about $20 - $80 per month, but there are also loads of very well off people - just look at the number of recent Mercs and BMWs there are going about. I think there is still a lot of corruption, and back-handers taking place.

It's going through a bit of a boom period again at the moment, with lots of construction work going on all around the city at the moment, and lots of lovely old restored buildings.

Yes, there are lots of downsides to living there (like any place), but overall it's reasonable place to go to work for a few years.

I have been in Baku now for over 2 years and have never seen a Subaru.
Hey Johns maybe too much of the $2 bottle vodka mate??????????
Hang on !
Thats what the locals are sticking in their tank!
Baku was the starting of the oil and gas industry over 100 years ago.
The Nobel Brothers Petroleum Company was established in 1879 and Alfred Noble was the benefactor of the prize as we it know today.
Apparently the first distillation of hydro carbons was established in Baku more than 20 years before the Americans!
The old oil fields still exist today .

But no 100 octane unleaded for us rev heads !

Rob,

that was only my second (and I think last) trip there. I was with someone who has worked there for about 4 years, and it was the first Subaru he has seen there as well. Was on local plates, so it will be going around somewhere...

It was an interesting couple of trips, but I'm not sure I'd like to work there all the time.

Its quite tough with BP, although if you apply to the Challenge Graduate scheme you should be ok. There is a shortage of young engineers, mainly instrument and mechanical from what ive seen, but there is always a demand from process (chemical) engineers. Challenge is really the only route into BP as a graduate.

See Shell are downsizing themselves further, good for our shares

Aye, he seemed very down to earth. I got the impression he fancies it out here yeah, but (and i quote) on the right installation. I don't think he had Miller in mind when he said that...

Lol, Keith just said he was buying a new Impreza with all sorts of spoilers (makes hand gestures) and stuff...
