Question Boost Gauge 'open' pipe question

Morning all

Quickie....

Boost gauge is out of the car at the moment, but the vacuum pipe is still connected to the engine pipe work.

I capped the pipe as best I could in the cabin, but there's still some air being sucked in.

Only short term, but will it cause any problems?

J.

How did you cap it ? You should be sbale to get it air tight if you find a screw that is a snug push fit and then pull a zip tie tight around the outside of the pipe once you've pushed the screw in.

Don't laugh..... I used a large bulldog clip ....very technical.

I'm not bothered about the 'air suck' noise in the cabin, but just wondered if it'll do any harm or cause 'boost' issues?

Well, it's a small amount of extra unmetered air that the ECU won't have fueled for, but on the other hand it'll only suck on light throttle, where it's using the lambda sensor to get the fueling right, so that shouldn't matter TOO much. On boost it will be blowing and the car will be losing some of the air that has been metered and fuel provided for, so it'll run rich. On the whole it doesn't sound disasterous, but for the sake of 2 minutes to seal it, I'd seal it and not have to worry.

Ta.

Bulldog clip did not work too well. On fast acceleration I did notice a little drop in power and boost seemed to tail off quickly, but up at speed when trying to accelerate...... the boost was coming in and out and in and out (sort of pulsing) and power was well down.

I've now used a screw, a cable tie and loads of sellotape 99% better and only pulsing very slightly up and speed, with a hint of air suck.

Thanks for the advice.... and I'll get the gauge back on ASAP.

J.

Ps. As you seem to know more than me on these matters, when I had the boost gauge connected and pulled away quickly.... boost would hit 0.6, drop to 0.5 and then the needle would jump back and forth very quickly. Does this sound right?

I did notice with the boost pipe open in the cabin a nice smooth sucking noise followed by a sort of fast 'phut phut phut phut phut' (like a machine gun) noise when accelerating.
