Default Insurance on second car

Okay, Scooby is on the way and I have insurance covered for that.

I'm also buying a second cheap runaround for work.....VW Polo for about £1000. If I put this in someone else's name I think I'm right in saying I can drive it 3rd Party using my normal insurance

BUT.....will the Polo have to be insured 'properly' in the registered owner's name?

In Summary Can I buy a car, put it in someone else's name and not insure it? I'm not sure I can!

I think legally that's right - but practically it is a problem as you can't get road tax unless you can show that the vehicle is specified within your policy document - and it is not good enough to just show your policy document which allows you to drive another car third party - as I had this very same problem!

Also, the V5 document only evidences who the registered keeper of the vehicle is, not who the actual legal owner is - and so whilst at one level you could argue the registered keeper was also the registered owner I could imagine if the police/cps REALLY wanted to nail you they could do some digging on this.

I think it's best to play it safe and it might not cost more than a few hundres quid if it's a cheap little run about - otherwise there are some insureres who will allow you to add a secod car for a very small extra premium, and most will allow you to add a second car temporarily i.e. for a month or so.

Try contacting a Broker (Swinton / AA), they will have access to schemes which will reflect the No claims percentage discount you are currently earning.
