Looking to setup my own website, dont have a clue really how to do it, probs get someone to do it for me

But ................. i have seen a name i want for it & i dont know if its available so i have a couple of questions

1> How would i go about obtaining this
2> Do you know of any good company's to set this up (cheap as its just something i want to try)
3> Do you pay any costs month to month for this privlege

Hello

If you just want to register a domain (and then think about web space later), I would recommend www.123reg.co.uk. Quick, cheap and painless.

You can easily register the name with something like

www.namesecure.com

And host it whereever you like.

Or you could register the name & take out a hosting package with someone like

www.titanhosts.net

All the sites have search facilities so you can check and see if the domain you want is available.

Stephen, i used 1&1 to register my first domain with. They have an excellent User Control Panel which helps when you want to meddle with things and saves countless phonecalls etc. However, now i want to transfer my domain away from them they're proving a *bit* of a nightmare to deal with.

Anyway, once you've registered the domain i've found the best thing to do (if it's a personal site) is to host the site on some free webspace (your ISP will have allocated you some) and to use the domain as a forwarder to this space. Then your only cost is the domain registration fee.

There's a search box on the Titan homepage that will tell you if your domain is already registered or not.

I got mine on Lycos. All seems ok so far!

for about £20/year (plus VAT), you get a .co.uk domain, 50mb web hosting, 50 email address and other goodies. have a look at www.hostplus.co.uk.

 

Yeah, didn't mention it before but i have several packages with Host Plus and they aren't bad either. Good support dept but again, they are the other half of the problem in my current domain transfer wrangle so don't feel like singing their praises too much.

 

yep got shed loads of stuff with 1&1 they're very good for domain name checking I normally use uk2.net because it searches all suffixes, do not host with them though they are pretty dire.

the hard part is getting a name you like that's available.

 

Never go for the cheapest vendor... if they dissapear you have to try and locate them to transfer the domain to a new keeper.. not easy as we personally found out!

Stick to the big boys.

Hosting on free webspace will not guarantee up-time as much as paying for your webspace. Plus of course you will not benefit from 'domain named' email addresses. You can sucessfully and cheaply host your domain with a number of competative hosts these days.... from as little as $5 a month - but don't expect too much from those in respect of facilites.

1&1's Domain Mail Plus service offers @yourdomain.com email addresses. I've been using this service for nearly two years now without a hitch. I agree with plumping for the larger firms though.
