Well thanks for all the advice on previous threads guys. Finally decided on an STi and picked it up yesterday.

Can anyone now offer advice on staying below 4000rpm for 1000 miles?

Try not to feel the need to ragg it from the red lights very time just to show off that ur STi will beat pretty much anything of the line.

Cant be done mate!!You WILL blip past now and then,just dont go too far past.

 

Its pretty easy once you realise how quick that fuel gauge drops I found mine quite nippy off boost and I changed up at around 2 - 3000 rpm. It is important to vary your engine and road speeds as well though. Don't sit on the motorway at at 70 all day for example. My change up light had also been set to 4000 rpm to stop me being over zealous

Just look forward to the 1000 mile service then you can gradually build it up after that.

Set the shift light/alarm to 3800, be paitent, go for a 1000 mile drive (not on the motorway and not at a constant speed)

I agree with Gary C

Set rev alarm audible (better than light) at say 3500, and get used to moving through the gears.

If you consider it as an exercise/training in getting used to the 6 speed box then you can at least soften the pain of restraint. Coming from the 5 speed WRX the STi gearbox took me quite some time to get used to it - so make good use of the time, ready for the 1000 mile blast off.

 

I kept more or less below 4000 for the first 400-500 miles.

Then I set bleeper to 4500, and occasionally touched 5000 for the remainder.

(this was actually dealer's advice; based on the fact that the STI engine is designed to rev a good bit higher than the standard WRX)

Should add that at no time was I on full boost.... just "gentle" usage of the power.

I think far too much emphasis is put on running in with modern engines... lets face it, if it was SOOOOO important to keep below 4000 revs that it would affect your warranty if you didn't, they'd deliver all new cars with the first 1000 miles done for you already!!
