Cone filter or airbox?

Cone filter or airbox?
Can anyone help? I have not long purchased a 1995 WRX and it has came with a some unknown make of cone filter. Should it stay or should it go? After speaking to a couple of mates with STI' s who had cone filters they reckon it should go as there cars did not run well with them, once removed they were fine.
