Default Rattling Wastegate

Hopefully somebody on here will have some advice, so here goes!!

I have developed a metallic rattling noise at low revs from under the bonnet. If I hold the linkage between the wastegate and the actuator, it seems to stop this happening - anybody know what could be wrong??

Thanks everyone in advance!

Hi mate
I have the same problem on my scooby. I have a MY94 WRX with a TD05 turbo.
The wastegate is worn in its housing, mine has done this for about 3 years and as there is no adjustment on the wastegate actuator there is not a lot that can be done.

I think we are looking at around £200 for a tubo overhaul from the likes of Andy at LP.

I have just got another TD05 which I will use while/when I get the other turbo serviced.

Let me know if you find a better solution

I had this problem, and the garage that I took it to bent the acutator arm a little to take up the slack and preload the wastegate slightly. They then took it out with the det cans on just to be safe that it wasnt detting due to excessive boost.
Didnt realy alter the boost to be honest, but cured the annoying rattle.
Hope this helps,
Rob.

Thanks for the advice, it does sound absolutely horrible, especially on lift off!! Hopefully be getting it sorted this weekend, had nothing but problems with the turbo lately!! Was overboosting before due to a leaking wastegate actuator (although was very quick!!), now with the buggered wastegate, only seem to able to get around 0.7 bar out of it!.

Fingers crossed for the weekend!

Are you sure it is the wastgate shaft that is rattling ?? & not the heat shields !!! These are normally the main culprit, Especially the collector box one underneath by the oil filter, Give them a quick tap with your hand to make them shake to see if it replicates the noise. If it is the wastgate shaft, remove the turbo heat shield & rattle it by hand, should be obvious, This shaft is normally threaded also so could be adjusted to take up the slack .

Threaded actuator seems to depend on model.

But I go with you DeanF, on the heat shields being the culprit.
Hit 'em all with your hand, from headers to turbo and on down pipe, I'd guess the downpipe ones ( or up-pipe ones ) have rusted the screw fitment area off!
Mine made a heck of a noise in the MacDonalds drive through when you get the echo's off the walls!!

I have taken the heatshields off and it still rattles - but I will try the bending the actuator trick and see if that works.

Cheers
