I'd like to start work on getting more power from my MY00 Impreza. The shopping list so far is VF28 or TD05 turbo, STi TMIC or Hybrid FMIC and bigger injectors/fuel pump etc.

My ECU has the TEK software but is TEK2 and as far as I can tell I need TEK3 to be able to custom map the ECU to cope with these mods. Am I right in saying the TEK2 can't be re-mapped to suit these mods?

What do I have to do as far as the ECU is concerned? Get the current ECU mapped again from 2 to 3? or replace the lot and get something like Power FC?

I know this is going to make me sound like a fool easy parted with money but at the time I had the remap done I was under the impression that it would cope with any future mods I made and I actually said something along those lines to the guy doing it.

 

I belive the original idea behind tek2's was a mail order / non specialist mapper provider.

What i dont agree with is that they are the same price and cannot be altered by anybody else. The main supplier of Tek2 doesnt explain this very well in my opinion and it misleads a lot of people. For what you are getting it is not good value for money, they made tek 2 to make it easier for them but without passing any benefits to the consumer imho.

Youre best hope is to contact whoever provided you the tek2 and see if they do a base map that matches what your are planning to do, probably not if you are changing the blower. And see if they will exchange your tek2 with a fee of course.

The alternative is to try and sell your tek 2 to someone who has a similiar spec to yours, swap ecu's, and go for a tek 3.

 

I wish I'd known more about it at the time Someone I know around the same time got a Power FC but I thought no, this TEK business seems the one to go for. Now it turns out I've got to pay out all over again on top of these other mods as and when I get them. I've never seen anything until now that says TEK2 can't be mapped again to suit bigger modifications.

I used to remap for free for further modifications for the original purchaser but it ended up being a mistake as I had more remaps for new turbos etc than new customers and my spare time disappeared!

Most of the present mappers have a healthy balance with far less than full charges for revisions.

Apart from some Tek 1s, invariably the ECU can be remapped by another mapper - at least for 99/00 - as most mappers leave a license in the ECU so they or another mapper can reprogram it at a later date.

 

I guess I should give the people who did that map first a ring to see how to proceed. I'm not in any urgency as things like bigger turbos, coolers etc cost ££ and unfortunately so does my house (should have bought a wagon and a pillow!)

Its just worrying to have spent a fair slice of cash to think I'd have to spend that again once I've bought all these other bobbins.

 

Whatever "Tek" you have makes no difference it can still be remapped to suit any mods at any time. As for costs I have no real idea what other people charge but if you had already had a remap then I would charge you £125 in vat. However that assumes I already know what is in the ecu, for a licenced ecu a remap would have to be a start from scratch job if another tuner had done the initial work and that would then cost £350 plus vat as opposed to £650 plus vat if no licence had been available in the ecu.

You can't expect a free service for remaps but, as you can see, a tailored approch seemed reasonable to us. Most upgrades I do take as long as the original work btw so you do get value for money then. However having an ecu that has been remapped once puts you at an advantage for future requirements, certainly cheaper than going to a different ecu whatever that is.

So you should be able to go back to your original tuner and discuss his charges for your requirements. If they can't help then , as you can see from the above, you still have options.

new mods mean more maps and you really cant expect to run your tek2 map with major changes in your power any time you make a change to you mods and decide to get your car mapped its gonna cost real time road map will take about 2/3hrs so stop complianing and pay the piper

I had a TeK 2 (example map) on a bugeye and was trying to follow in the footsteps of another SN member who had a turbo change and custom re-map etc with top results.

The SN Member (Ninnybobs) suggested I contact the Mapper who was (IMHO) completely honest, a gentleman, very astute and a total top bloke !! He advised me on intake, injectors, pump, regs etc and I now have a MY02 bugeye as a totally relaiable daily driver 325 BHP (well lane RR).... just might go for more !!

No surprises that the Mapper is Bob "guru" Rawle.....

but you could insert names such as Andy Forrest, Pat, etc.. My advice would be to chose the mapper and ask for their help with mods and take it through to to the end result if possible.

If I was a mapper I would get really miffed at answering a lot of personal e-mails just to find someone had gone somewhere else !!

I wasn't actually complaining that I'd have to pay for further mapping but my original worry was that after forking out c£600 initially I thought I'd have to pay the same again to allow the TEK software to be custom mapped.
